At O&B, we’re always staying on top of the latest and greatest trends, from marble popsicles to eco-friendly confetti. Whether you’re planning a wedding, milestone birthday, or fundraising gala for 2019, check out our predictions for the hottest event trends for the year ahead.

Give off a Scent

Candles have always made a huge impact to setting the mood for events, from elegant wedding ceremonies to swanky cocktail receptions. Scented candles, though, have the power to transform the event’s ambiance and incorporate the event’s theme. For example, if it’s a holiday party, we suggest lighting a candle with evergreen and juniper notes to get everyone into the festive spirit.

Let it Grow

Continuing the trend towards whimsical and romantic weddings, 2019 will see an infusion of natural elements in wedding décor. “Greenery will continue to be the classic go-to shade for the wedding season, with foliage becoming more organic and bountiful,” says Diana Ho, Event Specialist at Arcadian. “You will see trees inside the venue, lush greens for the ceremony, and simple white blooms on the tablescapes.”

Make it Pop

Although many venues do not allow helium balloons, non-helium balloon arches have been becoming more and more popular. “I’ve seen many balloons arches take over social events, such as bridal showers, bar and bat mitzvahs, and even corporate events,” says Diana. “It’s a way to make your event pop with colours – no pun intended!” It can also be a fun and creative DIY project, if you’re up to the task!

Cake Comeback

Cakes are back in the spotlight now! “For a moment there, cakes started to disappear,” says Julie Stulberg, Event Specialist at The Carlu. “Cupcake towers became a thing while dessert tables became even bigger.” In 2019, she predicts a major cake comeback with Insta-worthy décor elements – from paint strokes to gold foil – as well as a rise in the popularity of naked cakes.

Trim your Waste Line

We’re seeing more clients become more environmentally conscious in all aspects of their event, from utilizing DIY boards and easels over paper programs, to combating food waste and unnecessary packaging. “For your next event, feel free to request to donate any leftovers to a local shelter,” suggests Diana. “Or ask your Event Specialist to avoid using any disposable boxes or cutlery.” Every little bit helps!

Toss the Confetti

Speaking of being more environmentally friendly, classic confetti is getting a lean, green makeover! Eco-friendly confetti (ecofetti) is an biodegradable, organic solution to an otherwise wasteful tradition. “Florists can customize a colourful array of mini floral buds, seeds and leaves to suit your event,” says Julie. What a great way to bring Mother Nature back into the mix!

Do it for the ‘Gram

This one is a no-brainer. Guests want to be able to show off every detail of the event in their Instagram stories, so we’ve noticed increased popularity of visually stunning and interactive elements, like liquid nitrogen ice cream, beautiful charcuterie tables, roaming oyster shuckers and bespoke cocktail stations.

Beyond food and drink, your guests are looking for shareable details that create buzz. “From neon signs to balloon art, everyone is looking for that next Instagrammable moment,” explains April Mainprize, Event Specialist at Malaparte. “Any interactive displays like photo booths or graffiti walls will help elevate guest engagement.”

Found our Marbles

Marble is not just your kitchen counter anymore. We’re seeing this luxurious trend pop up in the dessert market, such as marble wedding cakes, popsicles, and macarons. “Dessert vendors are getting more creative with this trend and really thinking outside the box,” says Julie. “We’re excited to see the endless possibilities!”
